Renewals and Cancellations: 'The Bear,' 'Letterkenny,' and 'Joe Pickett'

The thing that matters most about today’s renewals and cancellations is that five months after it last aired, FX has finally finally renewed The Bear for a third season. What took so long? Were all those Emmys a problem? Was being one of the most talked about shows of the summer an issue for FX? It surely can’t be the expense, either, because it’s not like the actors are A-list television stars, and the set is … a kitchen. I’m glad it was renewed. I’m annoyed it took so long.

I will concede that maybe the writers’ strike had something to do with it because aside from The Bear, the other shows on the renewal side of the ledger this week are reality-based:The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Below Deck Mediterranean, Below Deck Down Under, Below Deck Sailing Yacht and Summer House. There are THREE Below Deck spin-offs. I can’t keep up with all of these series, and that is why we have Emma.

On the cancellation side, I’m bummed but not surprised that Paramount+ has canceled Joe Pickett, a solid little Western that came over to Paramount+ from Spectrum. I will watch anything starring Michael Dorman, but it looks like his limit is two seasons: Joe Picket, Patriot and even For All Mankind, in which he appeared for only two seasons. Also, he’s in an episode of One Piece, which I didn’t know, and now I have to watch One Piece.

These are not cancellations so much as they are conclusions. CW will completely sever ties with the DC world, as it has canceled Superman & Lois after its upcoming fourth season. The network once synonymous with DC series is now synonymous with, I dunno? Saudi-backed golf?

Likewise, Letterkenny will sign off after its forthcoming 12th season. All episodes of the final season will air on December 26th on Hulu. I am told there is a Letterkenny spin-off called Shoresy that Dan Hamamura assures me is legit. I remain skeptical. If a Canadian series airs in America and no one watches it, is it real?
