Renewals and Cancellations: 'Stick,' 'Happy Face,' and 'Wednesday'

Apple TV+ aired the first season finale of Owen Wilson and Marc Maron’s Stick last night. I won’t spoil anything except to say that anyone who has watched Stick all season long could have predicted everything in the finale. And yet, there are no complaints here. It may be predictable, but it’s also a likable, feel-good sports comedy. There are worse things this summer, and I should know because I recently started watching Big Brother.

The series has been picked up for a second season today. Let’s hope they figure out how to have more Judy Greer in the next season. And less Eric Stoltz. (I like Eric Stoltz. That character was awful — mostly his mustache. Also, bring back Olyphant. But no mustache.

Over on Paramount (Boooo! Booo!), they have cancelled Happy Face after one season. I do not blame them. Notwithstanding a decent performance by Dennis Quaid, it was a weirdly uninteresting serial-killer drama. It’s hard to mess that up, particularly when it’s based on the actual autobiography of the serial killer’s daughter. And yet! The James Wolk curse strikes again! It will not be missed.

Finally, Netflix has picked up a third season of Wednesday. No, the second season of Wednesday has not yet aired. It arrives on August 6th, but it’s, like, the second most popular series in the history of Netflix. Of course, they were going to renew it, as long, I suspect, as Jenna Ortega is willing to keep making it.
