Welcome back to “Renewals and Cancellations,” which is basically a catchall for television news, although there are both renewals and cancellations to report. In the latter category, for instance, HBO Max has canceled South Side following its third season. I never watched it, but Dan Hamamura has spoken highly of it on our television podcast, and our old colleague Roxana Hadadi has written glowingly about it over on Vulture.

Meanwhile, it’s not officially a cancellation, but Netflix won’t be bringing its phenomenal David Fincher series Mindhunter back. We were initially led to believe that the hold up was a busy Fincher who wasn’t ready to tackle another season. Now Fincher is saying that the ball was in Netflix’s court, and it chose not to pick it up. “It’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment,” he said. Bummer. It does, however, feel like a show that could continue to gain an audience on Netflix — because it is excellent — so that someday, a third season might be worth the expense because everything eventually gets a reboot or a sequel.

For those who watch, Mathis Court and The People’s Court will be ending their runs after 24 and 26 seasons, respectively, However, Judge Mathis has already lined up another show, Mathis Court With Judge Mathis, which will be available for syndication this fall.

Elsewhere, CBS renewed Survivor, Amazing Race, and basically its entire programming slate, save for Blue Bloods and S.W.A.T., which are still in renewal negotiations, and East New York, which is on the bubble.

Netflix has also renewed Outer Banks for a fourth season ahead of its third season. Outer Banks is another one of those hugely popular series for the streamer, like Ginny and Georgia, that doesn’t even enter my radar. I couldn’t even tell you if the series was scripted or reality.

It’s not an official cancellation, but it’s hard to imagine that Neflix’s Sex Education will continue beyond the fourth season. It’s probably a good thing if it doesn’t, as several cast members have announced their exit from the series, including two of its biggest stars, Emma Mackey, whose role is already reduced in season four, and Ncuti Gatwa, who will be the new Doctor in Doctor Who. Patricia Allison (Ola), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), and Simone Ashley (Olivia) also exited the series ahead of season four. That basically leaves Asa Butterfield (Otis) and Gillian Anderson (Jean) with whom to chart a potential fifth season. The good news is, Jodie Turner-Smith, at Ncuti Gatwa’s invitation, has joined the fourth season, so if it is the final season, it should go out with a bang.
