Renewals and Cancellations: 'Lincoln Lawyer,' 'The Great,' 'How I Met Your Father'

What is Hulu even doing these days? The streamer isn’t exactly overflowing with hits — Handmaid’s Tale has only one season left, Reservation Dogs is winding down, and Only Murders in the Building can’t sustain interest forever. Steve Martin is almost Joe Biden years old! Yet, just two days ago, the Disney-owned service inexplicably canceled the critically acclaimed and deeply loved The Great after three seasons.

The silver lining is that these were three excellent seasons. While I would’ve enjoyed more, the third season’s finale serves as a fitting series conclusion. There’s no worry that the show will leave us hanging.

The same can’t be said for How I Met Your Father, which Hulu also axed after two seasons. Though not a standout sitcom, it was decent, and after its renewal for a 20-episode season, most viewers (and likely the cast) assumed it would last long enough to answer its title’s question. Sadly, that won’t happen. (It’s definitely Piz, and we all know it.) With so few enjoyable sitcoms left, I’ll miss even the mediocre ones. Hilary Duff deserved better.

One character who is definitely staying put is Mickey Haller. Netflix announced this week that The Lincoln Lawyer will return for a third season. However, Neve Campbell will not continue with the show. The upcoming season will adapt Michael Connelly’s The Gods of Guilt, not The Law of Innocence, contrary to my prediction. Since Neve Campbell’s character doesn’t appear in The Gods of Guilt but does in The Law of Innocence, there’s potential for her return in future seasons, should Netflix renew the series again.

For what it’s worth, Netflix has also ordered a second season of The Murdaugh Murders, set to debut later this month.
