After a single season, AMC has canceled its misguided reboot of Orphan Black. As I mentioned in my write-up of the finale, if they’d renewed it, I would have watched, but I feel indifferent about its cancellation. It wasn’t very good, and considering its likely low production cost, the ratings must have been dismal.
Speaking of AMC, it’s worth noting that the streamer’s decision to license its programming to Netflix is working out well—at least for Netflix—as Dark Winds and Discovery of Witches are performing particularly well. I hope this leads to more AMC+ subscribers for future seasons. Also, give Interview with a Vampire a shot—it’s the best thing AMC has made since Better Call Saul.
Elsewhere, Apple TV+ has canceled its television remake of Time Bandits. Given that Apple TV+ renews almost everything, the ratings for this must have been dreadful. I watched a few episodes, and while I didn’t dislike it, I didn’t like it enough to continue. It was fine, which describes too much of Apple TV+ these days (but not Pachinko. Seriously, check it out!).
There were two renewals to note this week, neither of which is surprising. Netflix picked up another season of its very popular Emily in Paris, while HBO ordered another season of Industry. The latter series has gained a lot of new viewers over the course of the season, and for good reason—it’s terrific television. Speaking of Industry, FYI: The final two episodes of the season have been pushed to 10 p.m. to make room for The Penguin at 9 p.m.
It’s not quite a renewal, but Lorne Michaels has stated that he plans to continue running SNL beyond the forthcoming 50th season. He’s 80.
Finally, a programming note: Don’t forget that season three of From premieres on MGM+ this Sunday night. Pajiba BFF Roxana Hadadi wrote about eight relationships on the show that will get you hooked. We’ll be discussing the new episode on next week’s Podjiba, as well as playing our new weekly television quiz game, a question or two of which may very well come from this post. Subscribe here.
