Renewals and Cancellations: 'Good Cop/Bad Cop,' 'Palm Royale,' 'Best Medicine,' 'Industry'

It’s been a while since we collected the latest in renewals and cancellations, so let’s hit it.

This actually happened a few weeks ago, but I’m really bummed to see that the CW has decided not to pick up Good Cop/Bad Cop, starring Leighton Meester and Luke Cook. I didn’t actually watch it on CW (I wouldn’t even know how), but it was a nice surprise when Prime Video licensed it. The first season is still great, and the cancellation notwithstanding, it’s definitely still worth watching.

Netflix is quickly moving on from bailing on the Warner Bros Discovery merger, and has renewed Little House on the Prairie ahead of its premiere, which is not until July. The streamer, which basically lost out on their Warner Brothers bid because of politics, likely anticipates that a lot of viewers might find the idea of returning to the land very appealing right now.

Elsewhere, NBC is renewing its summer reality competition Destination X for another round. I sampled it out of loyalty to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I couldn’t make it through a single episode. Just not my thing, clearly. But the summer ratings were apparently very good.

Palm Royale got the ax by Apple TV after two seasons. I’m not that surprised. I muscled through the first season, but bailed half an episode into the second. Great cast — Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Leslie Bibb, Ricky Martin, Alison Janney — but I couldn’t find anything appealing about the show. It was messy. But more than that, it was boring.

I feel differently about Best Medicine, which I kind of love. It’s perfect comfort television. That said, I know a lot of Doc Marten fans who aren’t keen on it, mostly because it does nothing to differentiate itself from the British series. But I never saw Doc Marten and I love Josh Charles, so the latest episode is what I’ll be watching this afternoon to wind down. Also, FYI: It’s been renewed for a second season.

Likewise, Fox has renewed Animal Control for a fifth season. I’ve watched it all. It’s a decent break from drama. But I also can’t believe it’s managed to survive for five seasons. It is decidedly under-the-radar, although I would argue that it probably doesn’t actually deserve to be over-the-radar. It’s fine.

I don’t know what Smiling Friends on Adult Swim is, but I do know that my son was heartbroken to here that the creator decided to end the series after three episode, saying essentially that he didn’t want it to turn into another Rick & Morty. Good instincts.

As many may already know, HBO Max renewed Industry for a fifth and final season ahead of last week’s fourth season finale. I’m not particularly bummed about it. It’s a great drama, but I also feel like I need to take a shower after watching every episode.

And finally, MGM+ has picked up its iteration of Robin Hood for a second season. Never watched it myself, but it is a good opportunity to remind you how good its latest series American Classic is. And it’s smack-dab in the wheelhouse of this site’s demographic.
