It’s been about a month since we covered the latest in renewals and cancellations, and they’ve been piling up. Let’s bang them all out and clear some space on the hard drive, beginning with the newest announcement.
Dexter is officially returning for a second season. Most people assumed it would after Showtime on Paramount on Skydance canceled the Dexter prequel after renewing it and opening a writers’ room for season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, but now it’s official. Michael C. Hall made a video and everything.
Showtime on Paramount on Skydance — which may someday also be on HBO on Warner Bros. Discovery — also gave a pink slip to The Chi, which will end its run after its eighth season.
Also long expected to be renewed, thanks to big ratings and even a new California tax credit, is Amazon’s Ballard, which has officially been given the go-ahead. It’s an excellent summer show.
Apple TV+ has also had a busy month, renewing The Buccaneers for a third season, Foundation for a fourth season, and The Morning Show for a fifth. I cannot believe that Foundation is still on. The first season bored me to tears, but some folks say it got much better, though honestly, who was still watching after that first season? Shirtless Lee Pace only gets you so far.
In cancellation news, Fox axed The Great North after five seasons, and Netflix canned The Ultimatum: Queer Love, which I assume was a dating show. Hulu got rid of Mid-Century Modern after one season. The Nathan Lane comedy was really bad, but I kind of enjoyed watching it despite how bad it was. Or maybe I just loved seeing Linda Lavin on it.
Two Taylor Sheridan series were re-upped. The Lioness was picked up for a third season six months after the second season wrapped, and Tulsa King was renewed for a fourth only weeks into its third.
Oh, and The Hunting Wives got a second season on Netflix (thank the lord), and Amazon inexplicably picked up a second season of its limited series We Were Liars. If you’ve seen the first season, you’ll understand how baffling this renewal is.
