Renewals and Cancellations: 'Black Mirror,' 'Miracle Workers,' 'UnPrisoned'

Going into the holiday, several streamers have chosen to quietly kill their series while everyone travels, starting with Prime Video, which axed three series this week. The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter and With Love are all done. The first two series ran for one season (and were decent enough), while With Love managed two seasons before getting the axe.

Elsewhere, Miracle Workers — the last live-action scripted original on either TBS or TNT — has been canceled after four seasons. It was a neat show with a fantastic cast — Daniel Radcliffe, Steve Buscemi, Geraldine Viswanathan — that got lost in the streaming wars. Still, four seasons is nevertheless impressive for a series on a dying cable network.

Disney+, whose list of original programming has shrunk considerably in 2023, has added The Muppets Mayhem to their cancellation pile. Outside of Marvel, Star Wars, and now Percy Jackson, there’s barely any original programming left over there. Hulu is the more worthwhile Disney streaming service.

There are two more series that will be ending after their upcoming seasons. La Brea will end after its abbreviated third season, which will air in the spring, and Blue Bloods will finally end after fourteen seasons as the most popular series on television that no one I’ve ever met watches. However, Blue Bloods will have a two-part 14th season, airing in the spring and the fall of 2024.

There are also two renewals, one expected and one inexplicable. Black Mirror has been renewed for a seventh season, which is impressive for any series on Netflix. It will join the now canceled Grace and Frankie as the longest-running original scripted series on Netflix.

Meanwhile, Hulu has renewed UnPrisoned for a second season. I like UnPrisoned, which stars Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, but I honestly didn’t think anyone was watching it. I hope that Hulu does a better job of promoting the second season.
