Spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection through Episode 9

“Dexter Morgan, F**k You.”

Those were the final words of Captain Angelo “Angel” Batista, retired — now permanently. Angel Batista is dead. But Dexter didn’t kill him. At least, not directly.

Let’s back up. The episode picks up where the last one ended: Prater encounters Dexter and Harrison having dinner. Surprised to learn Dexter has a son, Prater sends Charley to investigate by posing as a hotel guest and ordering room service from Harrison. She questions him briefly, leaving him rattled but alive.

When Harrison reports the encounter, Dexter is furious. He digs into Charley’s background, discovers she has an ailing mother, and confronts Charley himself, slipping into the backseat of her car as the Dark Passenger. He slashes her neck just enough to terrify her but ultimately lets her go, convinced she isn’t the one targeting Harrison. Like everyone else, she’s just another pawn: Prater funds her mother’s medical care in exchange for her loyalty.

Meanwhile, Batista spends the episode shadowing Dexter. Eventually, he meets with Detectives Wallace and Oliva to share what he knows. They don’t care. After learning from Lt. Quinn that Batista is retired - and questioning his stability after the deaths of Doakes and Maria - they threaten to arrest him if he doesn’t leave town. Resigned, Batista complies. But on his way out, he notices a poster for a police benefit gala hosted by Prater. Remembering he saw Prater with Dexter earlier, Batista decides to warn Prater.

It doesn’t go well. Batista tells Prater that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Instead of recoiling in horror, Prater is delighted. He realizes Dexter is responsible for the murders of Lady Vengeance and the Tattoo Killer, and he wants in (as I expected). Prater offers to bankroll Dexter, recruiting killers for him to eliminate, in exchange for one thing: Dexter must kill Batista.

Dexter pretends to comply but cuts Batista free instead. Instead of gratitude, Batista attacks, choking Dexter. Prater intervenes, shooting Batista in the back. As he bleeds out, Dexter apologizes, admitting he’s the Butcher but denying responsibility for Doakes and Maria. Batista doesn’t care. In his eyes, Dexter is guilty of them all—including his own death. “F**k you, Dexter Morgan,” he spits before dying.

Dexter lunges at Prater, who drops his gun, but Prater and Charley escape through his vault, locking Dexter inside. Heading into the finale, things look bleak for Dexter. Prater and Charley are still alive. So is Al. Blessing’s role remains unclear. And Gina - Harrison’s new girlfriend - seems doomed. If she dies, it could reignite the killer inside Harrison.

The script for the finale has reportedly leaked, but why anyone - especially fans of this fantastic season - would want spoilers is beyond me. The best part of this season is the:
