In what appears at first glance to be a supernatural version of Yellowstone, Prime Video has released a trailer for their new western mystery series, Outer Range. A CGI-free Josh Brolin plays Royal Abbott, patriarch of a Wyoming ranching family. When strange hiker Autumn (Imogen Poots, the best name in show business) asks to camp on his land for a few days, Royal discovers a mysterious sinkhole in the west pasture with supernatural properties. This, added to a missing daughter-in-law and the aggressive demands of a neighboring rancher (Will Patton), pushes Royal and his family to their limits. Oh, and Brolin takes off his shirt.
I have no idea what’s going on, and that’s how I like it. Something about it reminds me of Benson & Moorhead’s The Endless, one of my favorite films of the past 5 years. The more inexplicable the terror, the better.
Honestly, Josh Brolin and Will Patton together on the screen could get me to watch anything. Patton is capable of being a magnificent creep, as his narration of multiple Stephen King books attests. And with a supporting cast that includes Tom Pelphrey, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, and Noah Reid, I’m cautiously optimistic this might be a fun ride. Outer Range arrives on Prime Video April 15.
