Get Back, a documentary about The Beatles recording their final album together, has been dominating Twitter conversations since its release. Peter Jackson has given us an inside look at one of the greatest bands of all time. Decades-old footage was repurposed and edited to feel like new. It’s an incredibly impressive feat that only gets more impressive when you hear Jackson talk about it. Luckily, he sat down with Stephen Colbert to do just that.
As always, listening to Jackson speak about his process is engrossing. He always seems to have such passion for whatever properties he’s tackling. That seems to be double the case for Get Back. Jackson is a lifelong Beatles fan, and it’s clear this was as much a labor of love as it could be.
One of my favorite things about the interviews is Jackson and Colbert’s rapport. Their friendship spawned from Colbert’s love of all things Lord of the Rings. Jackson even gave cameos to Colbert and his family in one of the Hobbit films. You can tell that they have talked at length before, so these feel less like interviews and more like an impassioned conversation. It’s delightful.
