No one needed a new series of The Office, but the amount of attention given to the possibility over the years made it all seem inevitable. Now it’s official.

As has been previously reported, the new The Office is neither a reboot, sequel, or prequel, but an entirely new series with a similar setup, namely that it’s a mockumentary. There have been a number of mockumentary series since (like Abbott Elementary), so it’s unclear why they even needed to call this The Office, but for the fact that it’s bringing back the creator of the American The Office, Greg Daniels, as well as the creators of the British series, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, to act as producers, and because The Office is recognizable IP.

Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore have already been cast as the leads in the ensemble, and I am not mad about that, even if it might be odd to hire an Irish guy and an Italian woman to lead a series set in the Midwest. I also find the premise of the new series vaguely intriguing, per Variety:

“The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

That sounds right up The Office’s alley, and there should be a lot of creative possibilities within that setup. I’m willing to give it a shot. It can’t be worse than the final two seasons of the original American The Office.

Production is set to begin in July.
