Here is the video that apparently ruined Pat McAfee’s Saturday: ahead of College GameDay’s visit to Salt Lake City, the University of Utah’s social media team asked a few students to do their best Pat McAfee impression. One kid said McAfee was corny. Another said he loved the guy but wished he’d stop taking his shirt off in front of college students. Someone apparently used the word “creepy” (though, I can find no evidence of that in the video but I also don’t always understand bro-speak).

That’s it. That’s the whole scandal. It is the gentlest roast ever committed to Instagram.
Except McAfee didn’t think so. He picked Houston to win, told Utah fans he hoped he’d never see them again, and then went on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to announce that he’d never been more uncomfortable in his life. He “hates” the place. If GameDay ever goes back, he’ll fake COVID (probably).
And then McAfee did the thing that takes this from “thin-skinned” to “WTF.” Twice, without saying his name, he invoked the death of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University last year, wondering aloud whether “anything really scary” had happened at a college gathering in Utah recently, and whether a university should be “amplifying reasons why people hate my guts.”
Bruh. A kid called him corny, and he went straight to Charlie Kirk because his feelings got hurt by a 37-second video made by a social media intern. ESPN, naturally, issued a statement backing his “very real and valid concerns,” and Utah, naturally, apologized for creating “any perception that Pat was unsafe or unwelcome,” which is completely ridiculous. I mean, the commenters here are probably going to roast me harder for embedding a video from Twitter (sorry, it’s the only one I could find).
Of course, almost nobody would have seen that video. It was a university Instagram post. The only people watching that are the parents of freshman hoping to catch a glimpse of their kid. But thanks to McAfee spending an entire segment of his own show on it, millions of people now know that a college kid thinks Pat McAfee is corny and should keep his shirt on.
Barbara Streisand would be so proud.
Anyway, our boy Andrew was feeling well enough to drop this Pat McAfee video in Slack last night. Huzzah!
