Netflix is premiering its new series, Messiah, on the first day of a new decade, January 1st, 2020. Mehdi Dehbi plays Al-Masih, which is Arabic for Christ or Messiah. He begins attracting international attention and followers through acts of public disruption. He’s also very attractive. Meanwhile, CIA agent Eva Geller (Michelle Monaghan) is tasked with discerning whether Al-Masih is Son of God or a con artist. She is also very attractive, not that it matters.

The series comes from Michael Petroni, the screenwriter behind The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Rite. Tomer Sisley, Emily Kinney, Jane Adams, and John Ortiz also star.

It’s hard to know what to think of the ten-episode series, which — like a lot of Netflix projects — just appeared out of thin air. It has a legit screenwriter behind it, Monaghan is great, and the production values look good. But it also looks like a fairly conventional thriller. It is intriguing, all the same, and with New Year’s falling on a Wednesday, there should be plenty of time to binge it over the first five days of the year.
