Matt Reeves Confirms 'The Penguin' Season 2 Talks Are Happening

Let’s talk about the incredible feat that Matt Reeves pulled with The Penguin. The show was first announced when Max was still HBO Max and Warner Bros. was dumping tons of money on projects, many of which never saw the light of day. The Penguin survived all of that, and despite lackluster trailers, it made the jump to HBO where… it surprisingly rocked?

I had absolutely zero expectations for this show, but folks, the hype around Cristin Milioti is real. She completely steals The Penguin right out from underneath Colin Farrell, who for the record, left it all on the field. He went all in as Oz, and that’s what made the show so compelling. You had two standout performances, and a neat little story about the mob world in Gotham. I always love when these properties, whether Marvel or DC, pull off the feeling of cracking open a graphic novel that you can’t put down. The Penguin nailed that perfectly.

With the finale smacking right up against The Batman: Part II, the chances for The Penguin Season 2 did not look good. However, Matt Reeves just offered an interesting update on that front during his recent Variety interview with Zoë Kravitz:

Yeah, we’re talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season. That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate. These characters don’t belong to me; they belong to the world. It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal.

Naturally, this is only going to fuel the rumors that The Batman Part II is cancelled or about to be delayed into the next decade as the Robert Battinsonverse pivots to HBO. (Where it might actually work better?) It doesn’t help that Reeves also gave an update on the sequel, which confirmed James Gunn’s recent revelation that The Batman Part II doesn’t even have a first draft yet.

When asked by Kravitz how the writing is going, Reeves told her “slow.” Yikes.
