Cecilie Fjellhøy was one of the victims who appeared in The Tinder Swindler, where she recounted her experience of being seduced and scammed by a sophisticated and ruthless douchebag whose crimes captivated viewers. Now Cecilie is back, in a new Netflix series where she teams up with the truly badass private investigator Brianne Joseph. Over the course of six episodes, they take on cases from women (and one man) who were manipulated and robbed by their romantic partners in romance scams. Those scams range from the classic Tinder-Swindler style cons to a fraudulent medical doctor who married into his victim’s family to a guy who lived in my town masquerading as a ten-year combat veteran.

The best part of this series, for me, is that the show isn’t trotting out a juicy story for the sake of true crime. The duo actually takes steps to interview victims and those affected, checking stories, and accumulating evidence, even coordinating with other professionals to track down a scammer who skipped his court date … after they caught him the first time. These con artists, by and large, don’t just end up shamed on Netflix. They actually end up in jail and paying back their victims (…well, at least being ordered to pay back their victims).

It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows of course; these are painful stories that impact real women and families and derailed real lives. Does the show’s editing sometimes make these stories feel contrived and cheap? Do the hosts’ talking head portions often feel badly scripted? Is it often awkwardly formulaic? Yes and yes and yes. But the heart of it is real investigative work that really hands back some level of agency and dignity to the victims.

This series is worth a watch just to see these guys get what’s coming to them. When a Rhode Island scammer is confronted by one of his victims—and then arrested after going on the run—it’s so satisfying to see everything come up short for him after thinking he’d get away. Truly, karma at its finest.

One of the fascinating things about these scammers—and one of the most rewarding things to see get thrown out by a pile of evidence—is that they can’t admit to their manipulations. Whining at the camera or to the police or flirting with the PI … They come across as fools, continually in denial. It’s amazing how powerless these scammers become when you know not to trust a word that comes out of their mouths.

Unfortunately, some don’t fall under the weight of justice that they should. There are definitely steep disappointments in these stories, but there are also victories. In a moment where sometimes you just need to see something go right, this binge is there for you.

Love Con Revenge is now streaming on Netflix.
