Literally Just All the Outfits Zac Efron Wears (Or Doesn't Wear) in Netflix's 'Down to Earth With Zac Efron'

Netflix's Down to Earth with Zac Efron is a strange show. In some ways it feels like a relic of the not too distant past, when travel shows could extol the wonderful diversity of the world and the kooky white 'expat' (immigrant) characters scattered throughout it among the various 'locals', all without addressing the existential doom inexorably approaching the planet from the then apparently unimaginable near future. They always took the form of some genial white man hopping from one 'exotic' locale to another, eating an overpriced version of local food and gawping bemusedly at 'the natives' and their strange ways. On the other hand, Down to Earth's first episode closes with an allusion to the now quite possible extinction of our species. Which, I mean, it's 2020. If you don't address that at this point so some extent then you are the least subtle CIA plant there has ever been. It still has plenty of the all-pervasive colonising white lens that our media is so saturated with, but at least it doesn't completely skirt around what is already the defining issue of our time. In my review of Down to Earth with Zac Efron I tried to grapple a bit with the two competing energies within the show: Issue and ego. Watching it you couldn't help but often think, 'What is the animus behind this thing?' Is it the desire to spread a vital message, or the need to project one's self out into the ether, to extend a brand? I will say again that I found Efron's bro-y, earnest energy relatively positive, and his motivations seemed pure. Nevertheless, there are limitations to this kind of project. Celebrity may well amplify, but it also dilutes. Distracts.
