I live in a city where a Trump yard sign would not last the night. I do not have a single friend, co-worker, acquaintance, or family member with whom I still speak that would vote for Donald Trump. I understand and appreciate that I live in a privileged bubble, but it is baffling to me that 71 million people in this country voted for Donald Trump and will probably do so again in 2024.
Do these people not remember how stressful those four years were? How that man dominated our daily lives? How every conversation anyone had was about him, about what idiotic thing he’d done that day. The man governed by tweet. Does no one remember that? Even putting his terrible policies aside, the man was toxic. He turned everything into a binary. Every conversation we had, product we bought, or place we visited was somehow a political act. And decisions like simple disaster relief were made on the basis of fealty to him.
And there are people who a nostalgic for that? The polls may be meaningless, but there is nevertheless a real possibility that this country would invite that man back into our government institutions. I’m not even sure it’s Trump they are voting for; sometimes, I think it’s just another opportunity to own the libs, and if it makes everyone else miserable, too, that’s just the price they pay.
Leslie Jones is also wondering what the hell! I don’t know if she’s going to be The Daily Show successor to Lewis Black, but she ought to be. She’s perfect. Here she is begging America not to make the same mistake again.
