Jordan Peele’s career as a director has been an impactful one. He took the leap from comedy star to horror auteur. His films are socially relevant, covering class, race, and stardom. With each new entry, his skill grows and his confidence shines. Few filmmakers are as exciting as Peele is. That extends to his role as a producer as well.
Peele has taken on many producer roles over the years. Recently, he used his clout to help Dev Patel’s Monkey Man see a theatrical release (and we were better for it). He also produced Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Nia DaCosta’s Candyman reboot, and a new Twilight Zone series. Now, he’ll return to his producer’s chair, this time for a docuseries about Black cowboys.
Nope, the third film that Peele wrote and directed, tells the story of two siblings battling a UAP that shows up on their family’s ranch. The family has trained and handled horses for film productions for decades. As one of the siblings (played by Keke Palmer) points out, their family has been a part of the film industry since the beginning, when the first assembly of photographs was used to make a motion picture. That first film was of a Black man riding a horse.
While the family in the Nope may be fictional, the horserider film is not. Peele will produce a docuseries about Black cowboys for Peacock, “which dismantles the whitewashed mythology of the cowboy.” The series will expand on themes touched on in Peele’s third film. Filmmaker Kevin McQuirter will be the showrunner, executive producer, and director for the series.
Here’s the official description: “The untitled Black cowboy docuseries will rewrite a foundational piece of American history, unmasking the forces that erased the identity of the Black cowboy from frontier history and present. Stories of real cowboys will take viewers on a thrilling odyssey that connects to the heart of the resurgence of Black cowboy culture that we see today across music, art, fashion and film in a three-part series to premiere on Peacock.”
