I love watching Last Week Tonight. John Oliver is a fantastic host, he and his writers tackle important issues, yet they manage to keep the show funny. As funny as it can be, it also causes me much stress. The topics Oliver dives into are often bleak, scary, depressing, infuriating, or some fun mix. If the show makes me anxious, I can only imagine what it does to Oliver. I was thrilled to see him stop by The Late Show to discuss happy things!
Oliver swung by to do a Throwback Backstory. He was presented with pictures from his career and asked to explain them. All three snapshots made Oliver light up. We see him with the legendary StoryPirates. There is a picture of him on the red carpet with muppets from Sesame Street. We even see him on the set of Community, Annie’s Boobs upon his shoulder.
In each picture, Oliver looks deliriously happy. It’s almost sad! This is the tenth season of Last Week Tonight. Have you seen the promo image for it? It features two versions of Oliver. One is fresh-faced and ready to tackle his new HBO show. The other is ten years older and beaten down by years of reporting on upsetting things.
Last Week Tonight is fun, funny, and important. I want it to continue for as long as John Oliver wants. I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw in the towel after this season. The man wants to entertain kids and be sat on by monkeys! That much is clear. Just let him go and do that before his body collapses in on itself.
