Yesterday was February 22nd, 2022. For most people, it was just a normal Tuesday (Twos-Day?!). For a swath of numerologists, it was significant? I’m honestly not sure. I have a loose understanding of people who claim that numbers influence our lives, and I don’t plan on tightening things up. But those people are out there, and Jimmy Kimmel sought to appeal to them directly last night.
Jimmy Kimmel: Live kicked off with hilarious local news footage of anchors saying “2 22 22.” From there it launched into a big dance number. Singers and dancers dressed as the number two exploded onto the scene with pizazz, and Jimmy just sauntered onto the stage. There’s something about someone nonchalantly making their entrance after a big dance number that tickled me to no end. It’s a classic Kimmel move.
Kimmel then flew into an impassioned monologue about the number two. What works about it is that it didn’t have to be topical. These were jokes that they likely have been working on for at least a week, maybe more. Yes, they did it for a specific day and worked in some current events later. But the thrust of the monologue, the focus on the number two, is where the comedy comes from.
Sometimes you just need to be silly.
