I rode the New York City subway system for 16 years. In that time, I learned that I do not like unsolicited noise. Someone could have the most beautiful voice, bopping beat, or an incredible four-piece orchestra, and it won’t matter. When riding the train, I want to listen to what I’m listening to. Sometimes, it’s a podcast. Other times, it’s nothing.
Some noises are unavoidable. People cough and talk too loud. Despite the existence and ready availability of headphones, people will listen to portable radios or their phones at full volume. Not everybody likes or can afford headphones, so I try to let that slide. It just comes with the territory of public transportation.
When I saw that Jimmy Fallon and Green Day had taken over a subway station for a surprise performance, I assumed the whole thing would annoy me. First and foremost, acting like it’s a surprise or impressive that the crowd gathered for a band of bearded men singing a Bad Company song is silly. There were cops and cameras. People were going to stop and watch no matter what. Also, while I didn’t mind him in Strike Force Five as much as y’all seemed to, Jimmy Fallon isn’t my favorite late-night host for many reasons. I’m also not a big Green Day fan.
However! I had a lot of fun watching this. I always forget how much I enjoy Fallon’s musical performances. He has a real knack for them. Also, Green Day has reached their level of success for a reason. The people gathered seemed genuinely excited to see this well-known band while going about their day. It’s hard not to get swept up in the fun and energy.
At least they didn’t do it on a train. People could stop if they wanted to but weren’t forced. I may be a curmudgeon when it comes to subway noise, but I guess even I have my limits. Let the kids have their fun (don’t look up anyone’s age).
