Many (most) of you probably spent at least a small amount of time over the summer watching the World Cup, and if you did, you probably heard the endless promos about the World Cup’s After Hours show with James Corden. The first few times I heard announcers promote it, it didn’t really click. James Corden? THE James Corden? Hosting a World Cup after-show? Who is actually going to watch that?
I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone watching. I also couldn’t imagine anyone watching James Corden’s late show, either. He’s not funny. He’s apparently an a-hole in real life, and he’s not nice to waitstaff!
So, of course, Netflix has cast him in the second season of Dept Q. Look: I watch a lot of streaming mystery series. Most of them are mediocre. Fifty percent of them are Harlan Coben series. Dept Q was not only one of the best — if not the best — mystery shows of 2025 (behind maybe only Patience), it was one of my ten favorite series of the entire year.
Why would you take something so good and cast James Corden in it?
This is according to the Metro and The Sun, who both report that he’ll start filming his scenes this week. But why? It will reportedly show the dramatic side of James Corden, which no one wants.
Unless he plays the corpse, Law & Order style, and unless his character dies in a horrific way, House of Wax-Paris Hilton style. That, and only that, will I accept.
Also, if you haven’t watched Dept Q, get on that, particularly if you’re a fan of Slow Horses. Same vein, except sadly we don’t get a series of Dept Q once a year.
