Hoda Kotb is stepping down as host of the 7:00-10:00 hours of Today, which she co-hosts with Savannah Guthrie, and the fourth hour, which she co-hosts with Jenna Bush Hager. She has hosted the fourth hour for the past 17 years, starting with co-host Kathie Lee Gifford and endless bottles of wine. Kotb took over co-hosting the earlier part of the morning show when Matt Lauer was fired for a history of sexual harassment.
Kotb, who adopted children in her 50s, recently turned 60 and, after a period of reflection, decided to dedicate more time to her kids (one of whom was recently hospitalized for undisclosed reasons). The early hours may have also taken a toll on her—waking up that early every day would challenge even the most enthusiastic morning person.
Kotb won’t officially leave until the beginning of next year, and she plans to stay involved in some capacity, ideally in the wellness space. Her candid discussions about her battles with breast cancer and fertility struggles have endeared her to her audience.
The Today show continues to lead ratings among viewers under 54, and Kotb is a significant factor in that success. There is no word yet on who will replace her, although it will take two anchors to cover the roles she leaves behind. Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie appear understandably broken up about her departure.
