We’ve been here before. Shows about solving ghost mysteries or mysteries about ghosts. The Fades, Lockwood & Co., and School Spirits to name a few of the recent ones. But none of those series had the storytelling power of one of our most beloved writers of the arcane behind them. In Netflix’s upcoming series, Dead Boy Detectives, Neil Gaiman puts a new spin on the idea and expands The Sandman Universe into this story about two ghostly best friends who solve mysteries on the mortal plane.

The eight-episode series is based on a comic spun-off from the Season of Mists Sandman book. It stars newcomers George Rexstrew, Briana Cuoco, and Yuyu Kitamura, Jayden Revri (Fate: The Winx Saga), Kassius Nelson (A Series of Unfortunate Events), Ruth Connell, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste will reprise her role as Death in an episode.

Dead Boy Detectives begins streaming on Netflix on April 25th.

FX’s The Veil is squarely in the Pajiba wheelhouse with its espionage, spycraft, and beautiful wardrobe. The supporting cast includes Josh Charles, James Purefoy, and Karol Steele, who are all always fun to watch. I would be more excited about Elizabeth Moss in the starring role if she weren’t neck deep in $cient0l0gy and affecting a vaguely British accent. Regardless, there’s no denying she’s a good actress who knows how to choose great projects so I’m sure this will be an automatic add to many watchlists.

The Veil premieres April 30th on Hulu.

If you need more spies in your life, HBO/MAX has got you covered with The Sympathizer. A24 produced this new series, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, in partnership with Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey. Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) is one of three directors working with RDJ and Hoa Xuande in this post-Vietnam War spy story.

The Sympathizer begins streaming on MAX April 14th.

This week’s laginappe is the most recent trailer for Season 2 of Interview with the Vampire. This season, beginning on AMC and AMC+ on May 12th, sees Louis and Claudia in Paris where they encounter the coven behind Théâtre des Vampires. It’s Armand’s time to shine. C’est si bon.
