In a development foreshadowed when FX has signed Hiroyuki Sanada for more Shōgun, Hulu/FX has given the go-ahead to two additional seasons of the critically acclaimed series. FX/Hulu will collaborate with the estate of James Clavell — the author of the Shōgun novel. Co-creator, executive producer, writer, and showrunner Justin Marks and co-creator, executive producer, and writer Rachel Kondo have committed to the development of the upcoming seasons.
When the announcement was teased a few days ago, the general consensus was cautiously optimistic: Yes, please. The risk of screwing up a nearly flawless first season was outweighed by our desire to see the return of Hiroyuki Sanada.
Globally, Shōgun is the most streamed series in the history of FX — and also the most expensive — so the move is not surprising. However, the additional seasons are not guaranteed — they are in development, and the renewals are contingent upon the writers coming up with a solid plan for seasons two and three.
