Everything's Terrible In Texas

There was a time when I was certain that 2021 would be better than 2020. However, that certainty flew out the window on January 6th, 2021, and has continued to migrate south ever since. This year has been terrible. Things should have been returning to some sense of normalcy and instead, we seem to be actively taking steps backward. It should come as no surprise that one of the places responsible for a lot of this year’s awfulness is also having a rough go of it. I’m speaking, of course, about Texas.

In a new segment from The Daily Show, correspondent Ronny Chieng put on his best Texas drip. He explained why the Lone Star State has had such a bad year. Y’all, there’s a lot of reasons. 2021 isn’t even over yet and I was shocked by how much I’ve forgotten. Texas seemed hellbent on making sure its citizens couldn’t vote, couldn’t have access to healthcare, and couldn’t have power during a massive winter storm.

It’s easy to say all this from NYC, even though we’ve had plenty of problems of our own. But I do feel bad for the people of Texas who don’t want things to be the way they are. Due to gerrymandering and voter restrictions, they may never have a chance to change things. Texas is a stark reminder that 2022 could be just as bad as 2021.

But hey, since so many Texans ignored COVID and went to baseball games, the Texas Rangers were able to afford some big-ticket-free agents this year. Yay?
