Eric's Secret Makes No Sense on 'A Million Little Things'

Earlier this year, when Eric (Jason Ritter) was introduced as a “friend” of Maggie’s mom, Patricia, the show teased that he might be Patricia’s boy toy, but we all knew he had a connection to Maggie’s dead brother. I assumed that Eric was the dead brother’s boyfriend, and that the dead brother had resorted to heavy drinking because he was in the closet, and that Patricia wanted to connect with Eric because he was the last connection she had to her dead son.

A Million Little Things threw us for a loop, however, when it revealed that Eric’s connection to the dead brother was more … biological. We were led to believe that he was the transplant recipient of the dead brother’s heart. That Eric had Maggie’s brother’s heart drew the two together, but there was also a slightly ick factor to it, culminating last week when Maggie kissed Eric. Eric withdrew from the kiss, and Maggie went home embarrassed, which is when we found out that … Eric wasn’t the transplant recipient. He had no scar, so unless medical science had figured out how to teleport transplant organs into place, there is no way that Eric has the heart of Maggie’s dead brother.

OK, so … who does? And why did he let Patricia and Maggie believe that he did?

We didn’t get any closer to understanding that in this week’s A Million Little Things, but Gary did some sleuthing — because he doesn’t trust Eric — and surfaced one more revelation. The family of Eric’s fiance, Chloe, is suing him for wrongful death.

What theory could we possibly extrapolate from this? All I can figure is that Eric and Chloe were in the terrible motorcycle accident that Eric has alluded to, but his girlfriend, Chloe, received the heart instead of him, but she still died. Eric, who feels guilty over the death of Chloe, thus sought out Patricia (and Maggie) for reasons that aren’t entirely clear.

This theory, however, is not particularly sound, either. Whatever medical information that connected Eric and Patricia was likely to indicate if not the identity then at least the sex of the donor-recipient. This storyline doesn’t make a lick of damn sense. I also don’t understand why Jason Ritter always looks confused and vaguely sweaty on this show.

As confusing as it is, the Eric storyline is still more compelling than what else is going on right now. Regina and Rome are still trying to adopt while also experiencing a taste of parenting themselves while Sophie lives with them. Eddie is being asked to apprentice a young female musician, which makes him feel slightly irrelevant. Theo — who is the most unnaturally sweet kid on television — is now a bully because he fears change. Meanwhile, Gary is spiraling. He’s sleeping around, yelling at his friends, and he punched a racist for giving Rome a hard time. He also threw all of his Maggie paraphernalia away, as though these two will not inevitably reunite.

Next week? Potentially some answers? Also, Gary gets an intervention.
