Talk about timing.

According to Variety, Dominic West is in ‘late-stage discussions’ to join seasons five and six of Netflix’s The Crown. The role? Prince Charles! Dude, you sure know how to create some drama, don’t you? The final two seasons of the show are set to follow the 1990s and beyond for the Windsors, the decade that included multiple divorces in the family, a fire that destroyed Windsor Castle, and the death of Princess Diana. It’s the season that fans have been waiting for, and showrunner Peter Morgan has committed to one hell of a cast: Imelda Staunton as the Queen! Elizabeth Debicki as Diana! Jonathan Pryce as Philip the racist! Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret! I’m sure Michael Sheen is waiting by the phone for the inevitable ‘can you play Tony Blair again’ call.

But let’s get back to West. For those of you who have been hiding away from the torturous pain of our current world — we don’t blame you — West has been in the headlines a lot for the past few days after he was caught canoodling with Lily James while on a trip to Rome. He decided to deal with all the hubbub surrounding this drama by doing an impromptu snuggle photo-shoot with his wife outside their castle and handing out notes to the press ensuring them that their marriage is fiiiiiiiine. See, scandal sorted.

Ha.

I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter claiming that this casting news is somehow tied to his recent cheating drama. Oh, see, it’s all publicity, right? It’s a way to drum up attention. He’s just getting into character to play a famed cheater. Any publicity is good publicity. Let’s be serious here, this wasn’t a PR choice by him. He’s just a jackass who got caught. The timing is, of course, hilarious, but that’s it. I imagine it drummed up some more attention for the Variety story and, assuming he gets the role, the promotional cycle for the season will certainly be interesting. But that’s it.

But yeah, I laughed hard at this news. Bring on the tampon flirting phone calls to Camilla.
