Conan O’Brien is the GOAT, as the children say. He has no equal. Name one other tall, redheaded, neurotic, pasty, devoted, charming, gangly, hilarious talk-show host. You can’t! Conan O’Brien has been a force for funny for over 30 years, and people have been clamoring for his new show. Step outside, and you’ll see citizens screaming, “Please, I need more Conan!” O’Brien could sate his fans with ease. Instead, Conan is holding onto his new show for a good cause.
Conan O’Brien broke into the biz as a writer on shows like Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. Because of his roots in writing, the former late-night host stands in solidarity with the WGA and their current strike. In a recent episode of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, he stated that the show is on hold until the WGA gets what it wants.
I understand that there have been a lot of great late-night hosts over the years. Personally, Conan was the first host that I gravitated toward. Still, despite my obvious biases, I stand by giving Conan GOAT status. His unwavering support of the WGA is inspiring, and this isn’t the first time he has publicly fought for them. Conan stands by the writers. Making emphatic statements, as he has, is the kind of support the union needs.
Having been to a show like this and even getting to see Conan live, I can argue that there’s a chance this question was staged. Conan’s assistant, David Hopping, is the one who picks the questionnaire. When I saw the show in NYC last year, I saw David come into our section to pick someone to ask a question, and they seemed to know each other. A lot of these types of questions are staged, but to stage this question, in particular, is the GOAT thing to do.
Conan O’Brien stands with the WGA, and you should too.
