I’ve said on here before that Matt Gourley is the secret weapon of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend. I stand by that. However, it may not be that much of a secret to people who consider themselves podcast devourers. Matt has been making podcasts since 2005. If you’ve never listened to a podcast from that time, it’s mostly people saying things like “Who’s listening to this” and making jokes about being on the radio.
Matt has been podcasting for a long time, and he’s made a successful career out of it. Superego, James Bonding, I Was There Too (a personal favorite), With Gourley And Rust. Those are just the ones I can think of with my barely caffeinated, half-slept brain. Matt’s career is something to celebrate. So, of course, Conan uses it as a way to mock him.
Since the early days of Conan’s podcast, he has razzed Gourley for being a podcast aficionado. He will bring up how guests fawn over Matt while showing his own bit of playful resentment. Then, Conan will list off names of made-up podcasts like Fez Weekly and The Chub Group. While it is a joke at Gourley’s expense, it also highlights how impressive his run of podcasts is. It’s like making fun of someone for never having a cavity. Right? Again, little caffeine this morning.
Gourley being a part of Conan’s podcast only makes his career more impressive. It makes sense that Conan would take the piss out of him for it. But Gourley is sitting pretty, and approaching twenty years in podcasting. If the idea that podcasting is turning twenty makes you feel ancient, it’s probably a good time to get your prostate checked.
