Midway through its second season, A Million Little Things — a family dramedy that is fueled by its secrets — may already be running on fumes. The big mystery — about the suicide of Jon — has been resolved; we know that Carl Grimes is not Jon’s biological son; and everyone knows that Eddie is the father of Delilah’s baby. There are not that many secrets remaining, which means that the writers have to rely on manufactured drama to generate storylines, which means a whole season about whether Rome and Regina will have a baby, as well as going through the motions of the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Gary and Maggie.

The one secret A Million Little Things had going for it, however, was what Eric (Jason Ritter) was holding back from Maggie. To refresh your memory: Eric was introduced to the series as a younger man Maggie suspected her mom, Patricia (Melora Hardin), had left her father for. We eventually learn, however, that the big secret is not that Eric was Patricia’s lover, but that Patricia had connected with Eric because he was the transplant recipient of Patricia’s son and Maggie’s brother. Eric received the heart of Maggie’s brother, and both Patricia — and later Maggie — developed an emotional attachment to Eric because he had her brother’s heart.

Maggie’s close relationship with Eric eventually led to Gary and Maggie’s break-up, because Gary was jealous. While Maggie insisted her relationship with Eric was platonic, in this week’s episode — after a particularly difficult encounter with Gary — Maggie kissed Eric. Eric — who is clearly interested in Maggie — nevertheless withdrew from the kiss, and Maggie left his apartment embarrassed.

And that, folks, is when A Million Little Things let out its last secret (for now). Eric removed his shirt — like you do after a woman leaves your apartment humiliated — and revealed that he had no scar. Eric didn’t receive a heart transplant. Eric’s a damn fraud.

But to what end? Why didn’t he tell Patricia and Maggie he never received a transplant? Why did he allow himself to get involved with Maggie knowing that this secret would eventually surface? Why is this a storyline on a primetime television show? How much longer can I watch this show for James Roday and Grace Park? Not much longer, if A Million Little Things doesn’t quickly develop another mystery more compelling than guy who fakes a transplant to get closer to the donor’s family.
