The Monsterverse is in full swing. What started with the 2014 Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla has grown exponentially. The titular character would earn its own sequel, and then two that paired it with fellow giant monster King Kong. Legendary Pictures has built a world around Godzilla and the monsters who are friends and foes. They then took their big monsters to the small screen.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a show on Apple TV+. It tells the story of estranged siblings who learn that not only do they share the same father, but that he connects them to Monarch. Monarch is a secret government organization that attempts to catalog the many giant monsters, or Titans, in our world. Their goal is to discover their purpose and protect humans from their destruction (though they aren’t great at the latter). The show starred Anna Wasai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Kurt and Wyatt Russel.
The Apple TV+ show was a huge hit with critics and fans alike. It helped expand the world in a way that felt meaningful and, most importantly, emotionally grounded. The biggest problem facing the Monsterverse (aside from the terrorizing Titans) is that the human characters often feel like set-dressing. Their stories are undercooked and pushed aside in favor of more monster mayhem. Monarch fixes that issue by telling an emotionally compelling story while still giving us a good mash of monsters, and there is more to come.
Deadline reports that. not only has Apple TV+ renewed Monarch for a second season, but they will be creating more spinoff shows set in the Monsterverse. Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV+, said in a statement, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, led by the brilliance of Chris, Matt, Kurt, Wyatt and the incredibly gifted talented cast and creative team. “We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise, as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.”
Few details about the show’s second season have been revealed. All we know is that the showrunners of the first season, Matt Fraction and Chris Black, will be returning. Aside from that, we will have to wait and see what form the show’s second season will take.
