Spoilers for Andor and Rogue One, obviously.
Just before the credits roll in the Andor finale, Tony Gilroy and company delivered one last gut punch to our boy Cassian: When Bix took off so he wouldn’t leave the Rebellion for her, she was actually pregnant and is seen holding their infant son while looking to the stars for a man who we know will not return. How do we know that? The ending to Rogue One.
In the final moments of that movie, Cassian and Jyn Erso are seen embracing before being vaporized to sh*t and back by the Death Star. That hits very differently now that we know Bix was waiting for Cassian with a baby. Although, that complexity is part and parcel with Andor, which has thrived on nuance and richly detailed characters. So, I’m sure Gilroy will have a deep answer that isn’t something like, “Bro, they were on a break, and these people are hot.”
Via Vulture:
I don’t think the relationship is inconsistent with the circumstances. Bix has been away for a year. And, you know, it’s a frat house there at the end, and who knows where she is. And she left him. You know, they’re beautiful, lively people. Whose hand wouldn’t you hold at the end? I think it turns into that, which is cooler and more interesting.
Touché, Tony, touché.
You can also tell Gilroy got real sick of this question real fast because here’s what he told Entertainment Weekly when they brought up Cassian hugging someone who was not his baby mama: “I mean, people who thought [Jyn] was the love of his life are going to have to reorient their thinking.” Does all of this have me crafting a list of people (and droids) Cassian totally banged after Bix left? Yup. Yup, it does, and I’m gonna apologize in advance if that ever sees the light of day. I make no promises.
In the meantime, Gilroy also explained why Jyn never showed up in Andor even though she had a connection to Saw Gerrara and the final episode smacked up so close to Rogue One that it should probably take a pregnancy test. Lot of that going around.
“In the end, I realized if people didn’t absolutely have to be there, they shouldn’t. And it would’ve been lame to bring Jyn back as a cameo,” Gilroy told EW. “That would’ve been really disrespectful in a way. I’d rather honor Rogue and keep it straight.”
Once again, another excellent call. Maybe not as excellent as “Is it really cheating if the Death Star shoots you in the face?” but definitely up there.
EDIT: A previous version of this article said Cassian and Jyn kissed at the end of Rogue One because I’m an idiot who clearly remembered it wrong. Guess I should’ve gone for that rewatch last week. The important thing is I made this mistake with my human brain, so let’s all focus on the clearing of that very low bar. Yay Mike!
