The Olympics welcomed several new sports this year. Normally, I wouldn’t care. The Olympics never interested me, and bully for you if they did. This year, however, something is different. This year we get to see some of those sports through the delightful eyes of Amber Ruffin!
Amber has been in Tokyo… being Amber! I honestly couldn’t ask for anything more. It started with her teaming with Tony Hawk to learn how to skateboard. Now she’s taking her newfound boarding skills in the water! For surfing! No, Amber doesn’t get in the water, despite what the cover image may have led you to believe. Instead, she discusses surfing and its Olympic origins with Surfing Analyst Selema Masekela.
They discuss the surfers to look out for, boards breaking in the water, and sharks! It’s all so delightful that … surfing may be my new favorite sport. All because of Amber. Her enthusiasm is so darn infectious. At this point, we should just put her in charge of the vaccine rollout. Imagine the minds that would be changed!
My hope is that, after the Olympics … and the pandemic, we get more segments with Amber abroad, finding people’s new favorite things. I want to like new things, but it’ll just be more fun if Amber tells me what those things are.
