With SCOTUS set to overturn Roe v Wade, people have been reasonably upset. There are those, however, who are championing the decision. These people are intent on convincing you that a woman’s wants are void. They say a child must be carried to term, no matter the circumstance. If there’s no one to care for the child, they push for adoption or foster care. Those aren’t always the best options.

As Amber Ruffin explains in the latest edition of How Did We Get Here, foster care has been negatively affecting Black and brown communities for decades. Black and brown children are taken from their homes under the guise of welfare. Their parents are targeted for being impoverished or, sometimes, just being Black and brown. It is a sickening disparity.

It’s not surprising that certain people think foster care is an easy solution. Issues that affect Black and brown communities are put on the back burner constantly. When those issues are systemic, the resistance to change is even stronger. At a certain point, it feels almost pointless to fight back.

Luckily, there are people like Amber Ruffin. People who call attention to very real problems. Now we just have to hope that something is done about it. Because until it’s fixed, it is not a solution.
