You know that Survivor season 51 is in full swing when a guy chops off the end of his thumb with an ax and has an emotional meltdown not because he lost the end of his thumb (which another player was holding) but because he was worried it would knock him out of the game.
It did not, and when the doctor bandaged him up and told him he could stay with despite losing a portion of his thumb, this elated man hugged the doctor and told him to show this missing tip of his thumb to Jeff Probst and tell him that Brady “is an idiot. But he’s a go-getter.”
And that folks was the meathead play of the week, but it was was not the knucklehead move of the week. That honor belongs to a man from Rhode Island named Rob. Rob looks a little like Bill Burr and he sounds a lot like Bill Burr. This man named Rob had done fine through two episodes — what we learn about him from the edit is 1) he’s very paranoid, 2) he found an idol, and and 3) he’s very annoyed by the other player on Survivor from Rhode Island this season named Eric.
Truthfully, everyone on that tribe is annoyed by Eric. He talks too much. He plays too hard socially, and he rubs everyone the wrong way. He’s obnoxious. It comes as no surprise, then, that when that tribe loses the immunity challenge, it looks unanimous that Eric will be voted out. Everyone agrees!
Never trust a unanimous vote in Survivor. Because here’s what happens: The paranoia, the irritation, and the homesickness get the better of Rob and he hatches a plan with Eric, but he won’t tell Eric what the plan is. He just tells Eric to trust him and that all will be revealed at Tribal Council. Eric is like, “…”
The television viewing audience works this out in our head: Basically, Rob wants to go home, and even though he finds Eric annoying, Rob wants to make a big showy heroic exit by sacrificing himself for Eric. And so when Rob gets to Tribal Council, before the vote, he takes Eric aside and he’s like, “They’re all going to vote you out. Play your Shot in the Dark. I have an Idol. I’m going to give it to you.”
Basically, it’s what we expected. Everyone will vote out Eric, Rob will play his Idol for Eric, and then … who goes home? In Rob’s mind, if all of the votes against Eric are nullified, Rob’s vote will determine who goes home, and so he votes … for himself.
There’s just one problem, which Rob realizes when the producer from behind the camera says to Rob: “You’re not allowed to vote for yourself.” And then Rob’s face does this:

And just like that, Rob’s entire plan goes up in smoke because he didn’t know a very important rule of Survivor. Rob stands there for a minute, curses to himself, and then … he votes for … Eric. The guy he was going to give his Idol and sacrifice himself.
And then the vote count rolls around, and it’s very awkward because Rob does not play his idol for Eric, and he just has to sit there as the votes are read aloud for Eric. But Rob must be thinking, “Well, this super awkward, but at least Eric will be voted out and I won’t have to face him tomorrow.”
Except that, unbeknownst to Rob, there was a lot of movement behind the scenes, and that unanimous vote against Eric didn’t actually materialize. In fact, one particular alliance shifted gears and completely blindsides someone else, Ana. Eric is saved.
In other words, the whole thing blew up in Rob’s face, he has to go back to face Eric, and he’s still stuck playing Survivor. This is why, even after 51 seasons, Survivor still has the power to surprise.
