Previously on Agatha All Along: Agatha Harkness is now Agnes O’Connor, a detective with the Westview Police Department, who is called in to investigate the murder of a Jane Doe whose body has been found in the woods. She is joined in the investigation by FBI agent Rio Vidal and also has to deal with a teenage Goth boy (who is only known as Teen) breaking into her house while she and Rio are discussing the case and taking him into custody to find out what he is looking for. Agnes slowly realizes who she is, who the dead body is, what really happened to her right before she becomes Agatha once again, and learns that Rio is actually another witch who has a history with her and wants her dead. After convincing Rio to let her stay alive until she’s back to her old self and capable of putting up a good fight, Agatha and Teen recruit three other witches (and Agatha’s neighbor, Sharon Davis, mainly because she has an impressive green thumb and because one more person is needed to complete the coven) to access the Witches’ Road, a pathway that will grant a witch anything that their heart desires if they survive all of the trials that attempt to prevent them from making it all the way across. Agatha and company succeed in arriving there, but they now have to deal with being hunted by the Salem Seven, a group of witches determined to stop any of them from getting what they want.
THE STORY SO FAR: Agatha and company continue their trek down the Witches’ Road, and they all encounter their very first trial, in which they find themselves trapped in a coastal house that tests all of their abilities as witches while also forcing each of them to literally confront their personal demons.
WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: Agatha and the coven walking into the house which looks like the set of a Nancy Meyers romcom, and are magically clothed in the kind of outfits that characters in a Nancy Meyers romcom would be seen wearing. Agatha is unwilling or incapable of getting Sharon’s name right as she continues referring to her as “Mrs. Hart.” The coven realizes that Teen has had a sigil placed on him that prevents him from identifying himself. Sharon/Mrs. The witches rescue Hart as she is almost pulled slowly into the swampy ground like her name is Artax. The fact that there is a show called Huge Tiny Lies, and it exists in the MCU. (Ten dollars says that Nicole Kidman is also on that show.) Sharon and her American Psycho-like admiration of the Witching Road’s choice of card stock for the house’s message. The growing friendship between Teen and Alice. The coven’s reactions to their magically swollen faces make them look like Bratz dolls. (Jen: “My face! My formerly perfect face!” Lilia: “Honestly…I don’t hate it.”)
Agatha shows inexplicable concern for Teen by stopping him from drinking the wine and finally drinking it herself. Lilia is confronted by her younger self and (according to the closing credits) her teacher, Alice, sees her mother, who attempts to die by suicide in front of her; Jen sees an unnamed male doctor who finds her “inconvenient” and attempts to drown her in the kitchen sink. Everyone works together to create the antidote for themselves and Sharon, and Agatha gives Jen the push she needs to help her remember the final ingredient in the form of a ruthless pep talk as she expresses how much she despises her but respects her skill as a witch. Agatha is confronted by her vision of her crying baby, Nicholas, in a crib, only to pull back the covers and see a copy of the Darkhold. The coven expresses their relief at surviving the first trial of the Witches’ Road, only to realize that Sharon didn’t survive, and Agatha responds to this horrible news with “Who’s Sharon?”
WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: This might be the last episode where we get to enjoy Debra Jo Rupp and her delightful presence on this show.
DO ANY OF THE AVENGERS APPEAR IN THIS EPISODE?: No.
DOES WANDA MAXIMOFF APPEAR IN THIS EPISODE?: Wanda doesn’t appear in this episode, but her presence is felt due to Sharon/Mrs. Hart experiences a hallucination where she says, “Wanda…Wanda, I’m begging you! Let him breathe! Please!” before losing consciousness due to the poisoned wine. This is a callback to the pilot for WandaVision, in which Wanda and Vision had Sharon and her husband to their house for dinner, and Mr. Hart suddenly began choking in his seat at the table when asking Wanda and Vision one too many personal questions.
VISION?: No.
ANY EASTER EGGS WE SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR?: Teen previously claimed his mother was dead but says that his parents are both asleep in bed after Jen insists that they need to be called so they can take him away from them. The card that Teen finds in the house contains a layout of blue flowers, which look similar to the blue flowers seen on the Witches’ Road upon everybody’s arrival. The bottle of red wine that everyone drinks from is called Reyna, which (if you switch out the “y” with an “i) is Spanish for “queen” and could be a reference to Wanda’s role as the Scarlet Witch since she was/is the queen of chaos magic. The visions that all of the witches experience are reminiscent of how Wanda uses her reality manipulation powers to mess with the minds of others and make them think or see things they may not want to think or see. The Kale Kare logo on the products from Jen’s beauty care line looks a lot like the logo of Kim Kardashian’s brand. (Jen’s products are confirmed to be fraudulent later in the episode, so…draw your own conclusions.) Lilia not wanting to go into the oven when everyone is escaping to keep from drowning, due to her having a friend who met an unfortunate end in her own oven, which of course was a reference to her classic performance as Mrs. Lovett in the Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd.
Oh, and let’s not forget the biggest Easter egg of all: Jen mentioning that Agatha’s son, Nicholas, who she abandoned so that she could become a powerful witch, could be unrecognizable to her if she ever saw him again and that he could even be an agent of Mephisto!
That’s right, girls, gays, and theys, Mephisto’s name was finally mentioned in the MCU! Which means that this moment resulted in the homes of many a Marvel stan looking like Pee-Wee’s Playhouse when someone says the secret word.
(deep, heavy, Negro spiritual sigh) Rest in peace, Paul Reubens.
I’m not getting my hopes up that Mephisto will make their very first appearance in the MCU on Agatha All Along, as I’m pretty sure that is something Disney and Marvel Studios want to have happen on the big screen, so they can make us line up and give them our money so we can see that for ourselves. (It still hasn’t been confirmed if Sacha Baron Cohen, who will be appearing on the upcoming Disney Plus series Ironheart, is playing Mephisto, despite what the MCU rumor mill has been saying for months. His role in the series is only known as “Mystery Man,” which means that he could be playing an entirely different character named Skippy McDippy and not Mephisto.)
ANY FAN THEORIES SPREADING LIKE WILDFIRE ACROSS THE INTERNET BECAUSE OF THIS EPISODE?: Lilia is predicting what will happen throughout the next few episodes, and when she suddenly says that Agatha needs to be saved, she sees that something horrible is going to happen to her and that the other witches will have to figure out a way to save her life.
The reason why Sharon/Mrs. Hart died is because she was never meant to be on the Witches’ Road with Agatha and the rest. The final witch who was supposed to join them was signified on the list as a heart, a black heart. And who is it that identified herself as having a black heart, and one that beats for Agatha?
This likely means that Rio will appear either this week or next week to make up for Sharon/Mrs. Hart’s absence, while also doing her part to make life hell for Agatha and her coven.
ARE THERE ANY SCENES DURING THE CLOSING CREDITS?: No.
DO WE GET TO SEE KATHRYN HAHN NAKED AGAIN IN THIS EPISODE?: Unfortunately, no.
TO SUM IT ALL UP: Another strong episode of Agatha All Along, which highlights not only Agatha’s growing concern for Teen and their well-being (Is it because her heart is starting to grow three sizes, or is she secretly holding out hope that this is somehow her son?), but how effective the witches can be when working together, even when they’re butting heads and getting on each other’s last nerve. Granted, their teamwork leaves plenty of room for improvement, seeing as how one of their fellow “witches” has now ended up dead, but no one said that traveling the Witches’ Road to get everything your heart desires was going to be easy.
P.S. I saw a tweet that stated that there are spoilers out here because of Funko pops for Agatha All Along, so…you may want to proceed with caution.
