ABC continues its search for a new host for the next Academy Awards after both Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney declined the opportunity. Kimmel, who hosted the ceremony for the past two years, made his decision before taking his usual summer break from Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Mulaney reportedly waited for Kimmel’s official pass before declining too.
Everyone had seemingly penciled Mulaney in as the next host after he successfully hosted the Governor’s Awards and was the most talked about guest during this year’s Academy Awards. Evidently, no one thought to actually ask Mulaney.
That said, Mulaney reportedly has a busy schedule that includes “several projects,” which may or may not include more episodes of his Netflix late-night show, the well-received John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA. Meanwhile, Kimmel has already hosted the Oscars four times (2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024) and the Emmys three times, and he’s probably all hosted out.
The 2025 Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 2, but the network still doesn’t have a host for the Emmy Awards, which are scheduled for September 15. Here’s a suggestion: Pete Buttigieg. That guy is great on camera.
