Jodi - What’s a song you love even though it isn’t from your usual preferred genre of music?
Kayleigh - Harder Than You Think by Public Enemy.
Steven - Friends in Low Places by Garth Motherfucking Brooks.
Emily - This is sort of tangentially related, but I have a theory that almost every major musical act has a least one song that’s good (Creed and Nickleback being the two most apparent examples). My favorite example is Katy Perry’s Walking Up In Vegas. She’s not “good”, but that song is a banger.
Jodi - I endorse your theory.
Kristy - I’ll say it. The Katy Perry doc turned me around on her. She’s not super bright, so she says clueless shit sometimes. But she works her ass off, even when she’s breaking. Like there’s one scene where her people know Russell Brand and her are divorcing. And they ask for her ring (b/c she never wears it on stage) and she has a breakdown. And they’re watching her cry and everyone just feels helpless. and then she stops. She chooses to not. And right before her big entrance, she plasters on a smile that reminds me of that lyric in the Queen song. I like her. Honestly, that doc is good.
Petr - Oh and Hot And Cold by Katy Perry is a hard motherfucking jam.
Brian - You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive by Patty Loveless.
Come To Jesus by Mindy Smith
Rebecca - The Devil Went Down to Georgia for me.
Petr - I’m rarely listening to anything that doesn’t feature at least one or preferably two electric guitars battering my face into submission, but fucking hell put on some Pink and I’m jamming all night long.
Jodi - I guess someone could like more than one song and still hate the majority of a genre, but I think that comes more when you’ve got an emotional attachment to artists or songs. Please see my Ronnie Milsap and basically all 70s-80s country music because of my Memaw and Pepaw.
Rebecca - I’m not a country music person, but I love Hoyt Axton because I associate him with childhood road trips. And also because he’s fucking excellent.
Lainey - LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live?” and literally every single song on the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” soundtrack, which is mostly Loretta Lynn, but a couple of Patsy Cline songs.
Kristy - T-Pain’s “Buy You A Drank.” I just enjoy it. I assumed everybody does. But when I hit random on my phone and the came on at a family pool party, my sister was downright perplexed. Yes. My typical preference is bittersweet electronic music belted by an eccentric Australian or quirky folk/pop sung by twin Canadian lesbians. But who can resist this auto-tuned hookup track? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dustin - “Club Can’t Handle Me Right Now” by Flo Rida.
Kurt - “Umbrella”, by Rihanna. “Talk Dirty 2 Me” by Jason Derulo. “The Promise” by In This Moment. “Toxic” by Britney Spears.
Seth - Awww, me and Kurt finally see eye to eye on something and it’s … Toxic? LOL.
Jodi - Such is the power of Britney, bitch.
