Does This Week's 'Doctor Who' Episode Mark the End of the Line for Clara Oswald?

Warning: Early Thanksgiving bummer ahead? As we already knew, Jenna Coleman is leaving Doctor Who after having won the lead role in ITV’s Victoria. As Clara Oswald fans it’s sad to see her go, though it’s understandable — like most companions — Coleman would jump off to further her career. Here we’ve been all la-la-la-ing along through this fairly enjoyable series 9, barely registering that there are only a few (three to be exact) episodes left, and perhaps subconsciously we’ve refused to acknowledge Clara’s impending departure. It feels like she and Capaldi’s Doctor have just hit their stride together. Surely we have another couple of weeks to gather our tissues and round up the alcohol reserves?

Er…maybe not. ***Possible Spoilers ahead.

At a taping of The Graham Norton show this week (airing tomorrow night), the Twelfth Doctor may have revealed an early exit for his beloved companion. Discussing Saturday’s “Face the Raven,” Peter Capaldi described the hour as “sad, gripping and very strange,” then added this remark:

“And it’s the end of the line for Clara Oswald played by Jenna Coleman who’s been my companion for the last two years. It’s the end of her story. I don’t want to go into the details of it, but it’s sad.”

After a quick hop over to read the episode synopses, it looks like the Doctor is on his own the last two episodes; “Face the Raven” may indeed be the last time we see Clara. As Capaldi said when asked if she might return, “Sometimes people can’t come back. Sometimes things happen that they can’t come back from.” Indeed, this promo has a goodbye scene.

I’m going to console myself with new Companion ideas.

“Face the Raven” is written by Sarah Dollard (Primeval, Merlin), directed by Justin Molotnikov (Atlantis, Merlin, Shameless), and also features the return of Maisie Williams and Jovian Wade.
