As Paul Bettany runs the press gauntlet for VisionQuest, he could have just as easily avoid the subject of the infamous Johnny Depp texts. Instead, he took it head on, and your milage may vary on the results. According to Bettany, he was never "close" with Johnny before those texts happened, and he stopped talking to him after they happened. That timeline does track. Bettany and Depp were forced together around for both Transcendence (2014) and Mortdecai (2015). A fair question is if they're not close, why would Depp feel so comfortable texting Paul awful thoughts about Amber Heard? And a fair answer lies in the parts where Johnny basically says, "Guess who did a bunch of coke and booze again!" As someone who has dealt with his fair share of crazies, I sympathize with Bettany. His brief end of those texts read like someone trying to nervously joke his way through a nut job's rants without becoming the target of his lunacy. Paul had just been stuck with Johnny for two movies in a row, who's to say that wouldn't happen again? I get it. Not exactly a profile in courage, but I get it. (EW)
