Nate Bargatze might be selling out comedy shows left and right, and has a viral SNL sketch under his belt, but he’s still an unknown. That was about to change when he got a chance to host the Emmys where… things could have gone better. Don’t get me wrong, the show wasn’t a disaster, and apparently, the ratings were solid. What went south was a running bit where acceptance speeches had to be kept under 45 seconds or Bargatze would peel $1,000 off a $100,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Club for every second they went over. It was supposed to be in good fun with a charitable bent, but it had the unfortunate side effect of award recipients feeling rushed, on top of the whole concept being beaten into the ground. In the latest episode of his podcast, Bargatze explained that he thought most people would go over and gladly chip in their own money to cover the loss and look like a hero. Win-win, but that’s obviously not how things played out. Bargatze is definitely reflective about the whole experience, and it’s interesting to see where his head was at. (The Wrap)

Leonardo DiCaprio was told his name was too “ethnic” to be a movie star, which is actually kind of quaint. Maybe the ’80s weren’t so bad— oh right, Reagan. (THR)

GentleRain was excited to find Harold Nicolson (Volume I: 1886-1929) by James Lees-Milne at a used bookstore because he’d just been given a 3-volume collection of Nicolson’s letters and diaries. “If you’re reading about diplomacy, he’s there; if you’re reading about novels, he’s there; if you’re reading about LGBT+ history, he’s there — no matter the subject, he will probably pop up cheerfully and have something interesting to say.” What’s your best used book find? My car gives me an overheat warning. Swiftly I eject the warp core, the smouldering battery sliding and skipping across the street, straight into the storefront of a nearby cafe and starting what would later be called The Great Fire of 2034.
