With James Gunn’s Superman just days away from hitting theaters, the writer, director, and head of DC Studios has been in full promotional mode while working the interview circuit. Most recently, he made some remarks to The Sunday Times that shouldn’t seem controversial, but Gunn knew right away how it would land.
“I mean, Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost,” Gunn said before adding. “Obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”
To the surprise of no one, those jerks were found on Fox News. Like clockwork, the network had a meltdown over Gunn bringing up Superman’s immigrant status, and how dare he try to lecture them on kindness? This is America, mister. We don’t do any of that stuff, especially through one of the most whole comic book characters ever created. Bring back the neck-snap one! We like the neck snaps, and the part where his dad is like, “If little kids are drowning, don’t save them. I love when that happens. Also, have I mentioned my dream of eating a tornado?”
Via The Wrap:
During an episode of “The Five,” hosts Kellyanne Conway and Jesse Watters had plenty to say and joke about after Gunn explained in an interview with The Times U.K. that the iconic hero would explore themes of the immigrant journey, seeing as he’s a refugee from another planet.“We don’t go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us,” Conway said. “I wonder if it will be successful.”
“You know what it says on his cape,” Watters asked with a smirk. “MS-13.”
Superman is practically a biblical character at this point. If you don’t know that his whole deal is that he’s a “stranger from another planet,” maybe you’re the one who’s not an American. Something to think about. As for kindness, for decades Superman has been called the “Big Blue Boy Scout.” He’s synonymous with getting cats out of trees and helping old ladies across the street. I’m old enough to remember when Republicans touted themselves as the party of family values, but they seem to get really pissed off when you tell them to be nice to others. In fact, they’ll deport you for that sh*t. Kindness to others? Get ICE on the phone!
You can watch Fox News have a conniption below and churn out another news cycle about James Gunn’s Superman like racist fish in a barrel:

P.S. I stumbled across the article about how Superman is actually Jewish if you want an interesting read on a topic that I’m sure our side of the aisle won’t be weird about. Haha! Why would you think that?
