Jmsudar has been rereading Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber series, which influenced him as a pre-teen, and reached the least remembered installment, Trumps of Doom. “The battles in A Song of Ice and Fire (Zelazny was a mentor to GRRM) are tense and brutal, the stakes are human and punishing, and by comparison, Corwin watching a battle from a bird’s eye view and speculating on which of his relatives are doing what is just kinda weird.” Which formative books do you recommend?
