Fun fact: I am not a long-term planner, but I also abhor procrastination, which is a neat little paradox. I don’t plan long term, because that would mean having something on my existential plate, so to speak, and I don’t want that hanging over my head, because I would want to do it immediately. What it means as a site runner, basically, is that I rarely plan anything beyond the next post I’m writing. It also means that I don’t use spreadsheets very often (thankfully, we have some spreadsheet junkies among the staff who are very helpful in that regard).
In 2014, someone — probably an aggressive commenter (ahem) — suggested to me that we needed to put a Pajiba 10 Hall of Fame together, so that voters would know who was no longer eligible before they put their Freebies list together — for newbies, the annual Pajiba 10 is decided by our readers based on a theoretical Freebies list. In order to diversify the list, we decided that anyone who made the Pajiba 10 three times would no longer be eligible. It was basically the Nathan Fillion rule because that dude dominated back in the aughts because our readers were Firefly/Serenity obsessed.
Anyway, when we put the HoF together in 2014, I suspect my brain operated something like this: “You have an hour to get the next post up. Go!” And rather than do it properly by putting together a spreadsheet, I bounced back and forth between — at the time — around 8 posts and tallied up the appearances.
I tallied wrong. Very wrong. Worse still, we’ve been working off of that 2014 post for the last five years, so the Hall of Fame members that were declared in 2014 remained declared. EVERYTHING WE’VE EVER TOLD YOU IS A LIE.
Thankfully reader Kim S. came along and set things right. No more Fake News! She compiled a spreadsheet of all the past winners. She did the work that I failed to do properly, and she noticed that there were several people in the Hall of Fame who didn’t belong in the Hall of Fame. Gasp!
The egg on my damn face, people. The Hall of Fame is a lie. It’s been a lie for 5 years. That very select club, it turns out, is a lot more selective than previously believed. With the power of a single spreadsheet, Kim S. has reduced the Hall of Fame ranks from 21 members to … 7. That means, there were all those years you could have been voting for Zooey Deschanel and James McAvoy and Alison Brie and Timothy Olyphant that you weren’t. To be honest, of the improperly declared HoF members, I think Olyphant is the only one that might have gone in otherwise. You can be mad at me if you’d like, but I would first like to remind you all that you once put Jeremy Renner in the Pajiba 10. And you put Chris Pratt in … twice. And David Tennant is not in the Hall of Fame and that’s your fault, not mine. David freaking Tennant? I mean, is there a celebrity who better epitomizes this very site than Tennant? WE’VE ALL MADE MISTAKES is what I’m saying.
So, due to, uh, a rounding error, here are the members of the Hall of Fame who will be stripped of their status (at least for the time being):
Robert Downey, Jr.
Michael B. Jordan
They have all made two appearances. If you would like to see them in the Hall of Fame, you have the power to make that happen. In the meantime, here is the Official, No Really! list of the Pajiba 10 Hall of Fame members, again with a big thanks to Kim S. for putting in the work here.
