Our Soundtrack of 2016
How do you score a year of heartache, tragedy, hope, agony, and defeat?
No thank you, Petr. Not like this.
I asked some of the staff here to pick some music that became anthems, coping mechanisms, sanctuary or straight up rage fight songs. In the interest of trying to not crash the page, I’ve included the songs on a Spotify Playlist here and a YouTube Playlist here so you can rage on. Here’s what we got for you, poodles.
November was a lot of “It’s Quiet Uptown” and “I’m Afraid of Americans.” But there were good moments too. I included “Let’s Get Out of This Country” by Camera Obscura for obvious.
“It’s Quiet Uptown” - Kelly Clarkson
“I’m Afraid of Americans” - David Bowie
“Let’s Get Out of This Country” - Camera Obscura
“Lazarus” - David Bowie
I’ve been having a great time listening to the new up and coming groups from between about 1971 and 1988. I predict big things for these ‘Metal-licker’ chaps
I’m a simple man. Give me socialism, give me metal, give me a drink. Happy.
“Hardwired” - Metallica
“Erase This” - Lamb of God
“512” - Lamb of God
“More News From Nowhere” - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
“Segundo movimiento: lo de fuera” - Extremoduro
“Bad Religion” - Motörhead
“Desolation Row” - Bob Dylan
The weekend after the election on a bus to New York I listened to Florence + the Machine’s “Shake it Out” a few times on repeat. The song was written during and mostly about a hangover, and it felt like we were all having something of a national hangover at the time. “I’m ready to suffer and I’m ready to hope.”
I’d say Pink’s “Dear Mr.President” but as hard as it was to listen to when that song came out under Bush, it’s going to be just UGLY if I listen to it now.
“Shake it Out” Florence + the Machine
“I Wanna Get Better” Bleachers
“Dear Mr. President” Pink
The fun part is when it turns into a round of Dustin and I saying what random white guy band from 2012 that we just listened to for the first time, while TK beats his head against the monitor.
“What a Year for a New Year” - Dan Wilson
I do not listen to a ton of music, but I’m feeling “The Dickhead Song” and “Keep Awake” a lot this year.
“The Dickhead Song” - Miles Betterman
“Keep Awake” - 100 Monkeys
A lot of Rage Against the Machine. A LOT. ALLLLL The DMX, too.
“Hard Out Here” Lily Allen
“Killing in the Name” - Rage Against the Machine
“Bulls on Parade” - Rage Against the Machine
“X Gon Give it to Ya” - DMX
“Where the Hood At” - DMX
“X Gon Give it To Ya” has been a big one for me. Even made it my ring tone and I’m now actually happy when my phone rings.
“X Gon Give It to Ya” - DMX
I had a lot of heartbreak and woe so Beyoncé was bae there when I needed her most and for that, as cliche as it is, I can never thank her enough so pulling my out of my anxiety filled depression. Radiohead is just a mainstay but “Subterranean Homesick Alien” is pretty spot on for my general feeling about this year.
“Subterranean Homesick Alien” - Radiohead
“Ful Stop” - Radiohead
“Always Alright” - Alabama Shakes
“Us” - Brother Ali
“96 Quite Bitter Beings” - CKY
“Uncle Sam Goddamn” - Brother Ali
“Sorry” - Beyoncé
“Formation” - Beyoncé
“Hold Up” - Beyoncé
My yearly soundtrack consists of entirely Hamilton, Moana and My Little Pony, plus about three weeks of Taylor Swift when I briefly switched over to Apple’s streaming music service. I have three kids who are obsessed with Lin Manuel Miranda and, apparently, Daniel Ingram, who is better than you might think, except that “Raise this Barn,” performed by the hillbilly pony, sounds like, “Racist Barn.”
“How Far I’ll Go” Auli’i Cravalho, because I’m not made of fucking stone.
“Long Live the Chief” - Jidenna
“Nobody Speak” - DJ Shadow feat. Run the Jewels
“Lullabies” (Adventure Club Remix) - Yuna
“Repentless” - Slayer
“Leaderless and Self-Enlisted” - Norma Jean
“House of Suffering” - Bad Brains
“Fake Messiah” - Lamb of God
And so, as the year winds down, it’s only fitting that we ask you, our dear readers, what song is fitting of the year that time will have fucked over. Feel free to use ours as a guide or supply your own. If you need some help picking out some songs from this year, Billboard has got ya covered. I’ll be back with results next week and in the meantime, I’ll try to update the playlists with all y’alls music too. Good luck and rage on.
