Where were you 20 years ago today? Parents, do you know where your children were? Because I’ll tell you where they were. Engaging in seductive dance moves in your basement.
Seductive moves like these.
Yes, my friends. We are 20 years removed from the first time the Macarena shot to number one.
The Macarena came to us courtesy of Spain’s Los del Rio. Though it was released in 1993, the song found popularity in America when it was remixed by the Bayside Boys, a group of producers likely not associated with the fictional California-based high school. They added English lyrics, poetic bon mots that included:
Now don’t you worry about my boyfriend The boy whose name is Vitorino I don’t want him, can’t stand him He was no good so I… ha ha ha haNow come on, what was I supposed to do?
He was out of town and his two friends were so fine
She had a threeway fingercuffs bang with his friends, if you weren’t certain. With this luscious picture painted, the song spent 14 weeks at number one in the US.
And what took it there? THE LIT AS SHIT DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION, SON.
Ok but the 1996 DNC was lit pic.twitter.com/nuHp1lBND8

And that’s how a very Spanish song became the whitest song in the world.
