Our President-Elect Doesn't Care About Racists, But Dairy Queen Sure as Hell Does

There have been an inordinate amount of hate crimes since the election of Donald Trump, while racists have felt emboldened by their white-nationalist savior to harass and assault people of color. The one glimmer in all of this, however, is that those accused of hate crimes are still being punished by law enforcement, and those who use hate speech are still being reprimanded by their employers, and that schools — in some cases, at least — are punishing students who bully marginalized kids.

In other words, while common decency didn’t necessarily rule the day at the ballot box, it still seems to have a place in schools and workplaces. Some racists are still getting their comeuppance, or at least the ones who haven’t been nominated for a position in the Trump cabinet.

To wit: Out in Illinois, Deianeira Ford was not satisfied with her order at a Dairy Queen, and after the owner refused to fix it, she asked for a refund. (I have no idea how you fix a Dairy Queen order, because no matter what you order, it still tastes like Dairy Queen, and since they discontinued their butterscotch dip because it was probably a Class V carcinogen, Dairy Queen has little to offer.)

Rather than give her a refund, the owner called her and her children a racial slur and suggested that they go back to where they came from (this was not a reference to their house in Illinois).

“He took out his flip phone and he said he would take a picture and put it on Facebook because he wants to show the world what kind of n***s he has to deal with. Then he shut the window and walked away.”

The police were subsequently called in, and though they were unable to do anything (being as racist asshole is not a crime, alas), the police officer wrote a report confirming that the owner repeatedly and proudly used racial slurs to describe Ford and her children.

Afterward, a rightfully outraged Ford took to social media, where she relayed her account. It not only went viral, it captured the attention of Dairy Queen’s corporate folks, and this is where this story has a happy ending. Because not only did Dairy Queen call the actions of the owner “inexcusable, reprehensible and unacceptable,” they shut down that franchise. They took it away from the owner and refuse to open it again until and unless it comes under new ownership.

Dairy Queen don’t suffer no racist fools, y’all. This move has also emboldened me to continue guilt-free with a summer family tradition of the occasional “Dad Dinner,” which amounts to bribing my kids into eating as many vegetables as possible with the promise that I will take them to Dairy Queen if they meet their veggie quota.
