The Malcolm in the Middle reboot is getting a lot of press these days, with the announcement and even the first image from the set. There’s been a lot of talk about Taylor Dearden’s dad returning with most of the original cast, except for Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey and is being recast because the former actor has permanently returned to civilian life.
Less talked about is whether Craig Lamar Traylor will return for the reunion. Traylor played Stevie, Malcolm’s asthmatic best friend, in a recurring role across all seven seasons. After the show ended, Traylor stepped away from acting to pursue “personal interests.” A few years ago, I actually did a deep dive into Traylor’s whereabouts for another publication, but ended up self-spiking the piece because it felt too invasive.
What we do know is that Traylor left the industry. However, he made a cameo earlier this year — described as a bit of an Easter egg — in a Frankie Muniz movie called Renner. He was even interviewed on the red carpet at the premiere, though the journalist didn’t think to ask him about the reboot, for some reason.
And that’s little Stevie, all grown up.
Given that Traylor has at least reunited with his old childhood friend, it opens the door to the possibility that Stevie may return, probably again in some sort of cameo capacity. So far, there have been no public statements confirming or denying his return. In the meantime, he’s spent the intervening years pursuing other creative endeavors like wire art and, at one point, he was an aspiring tattoo artist.
